I'm pleased to announce that most recently, in May 2013, I received first place in the ArtEZ Composition Contest that took place at the International Jazz Festival in Enschede, the Netherlands. The five finalists had their charts performed by the wonderful Millenium_Jazz_Orchestra, conducted by Joan Reinders. My piece, "The Dancing Winds" received 3,000 Euros in addition to a great performance of the chart.
In the meantime, we have many gigs lined up in June 2013, so check out the sidebar and hopefully we'll see you at one of them soon!
Metropole Orchestra Arranger's Workshop
Recently I was given the exciting opportunity to attend the 2012 Metropole Orchestra Arranger's Workshop in Hilversum, the Netherlands, and write an arrangement for Kurt Elling, as well as write an additional 2 minute arrangement for studio orchestra (it's huge!) within a few days. I will say that it was one of the top experiences of my entire life and has inspired me to go deeper into my writing and to write more.
And the result of this? You can hear my arrangement of Joe Zawinul's/Kurt Elling's "Time to Say Goodbye" for Kurt and the Metropole Orchestra from their radio broadcast by clicking "Composer" and "Studio Orchestra," and scrolling through the radio player (I give the time it happens there.) Let me know what you think!
I'm still in the process of trying to line up our next Jazz Orchestra gig, but in the meantime, I'll also be guest conducting the Empire State Youth Jazz Ensemble (I played piano in this amazing ensemble when I was in high school) on two of my pieces in May. I've been to a rehearsal, and the band has done a great job of handling my music (which is not easy stuff! My band members can testify to that!) and there are some strong improvisers in there. So Albany folks, be on the lookout!
New Works for Jazz Orchestra
I would like to invite you this Sunday, May 1st at 8pm, to Shea Auditorium of William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. Shannon Baker and I will be presenting nearly two hours of new works, mostly with the William Paterson Jazz Orchestra.
The program includes my new "Phases of Water," an approx. 35-minute suite composed of three movements: "Snow," "Ice Storm," and "Rain." It will also include a re-arrangement of a short Bach Adagio as a tango for Jazz Orchestra.
The concert is free, and is sure to be a unique experience.
